Quick verdict

Best for families and health-conscious consumers seeking the most rigorously certified organic mattresses on the market, from crib to luxury adult. The brand holds more third-party certifications than any competitor and stands out for its proprietary glueless coil technology (eliminating up to 10 lbs of adhesives per mattress) and modular designs that let customers swap individual comfort layers rather than replacing entire mattresses. The main caveat is premium pricing: a Queen starts at ~$1,999 (versus ~$1,399 for their own budget sub-brand Happsy), and customer service complaints highlight slow response times.

5/5

Eliminates all polyurethane foam, vinyl/PVC, flame retardants, PFAS, formaldehyde, glues, and fibreglass. First mattress brand to earn EWG VERIFIED status.

Labor & Ethics
4/5

All products made in the USA at a GOTS-certified factory in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, by skilled Amish craftspeople. GOTS certification includes social/ethical criteria. BBB Accredited since 2007, Deducted for limited disclosure on imported component supply chain labour conditions.

Environmental Impact
4/5

1% for the Planet member donating $200,000+ annually. EPA Green Power Partner using renewable energy. Roll-packed mattresses in recyclable kraft paper. Modular mattress designs extend product lifespan. Invested ~$48,000 recycling returned mattresses (2019). No published carbon footprint data or Science-Based Targets.

Transparency
5/5

Publishes sustainability reports (2020–21 and 2023 confirmed). Detailed certifications page with explanations. Products listed in Health Product Declaration database. Ranked #1 in transparency in the investigative "The Mattress Still Matters" report. Named leaders in safer chemical alternatives by Clean Production Action.

Price-to-Value
3/5

Significantly more expensive than competitors with similar organic certifications. Queen Chorus at ~$1,999 costs $600+ more than comparable Avocado Green or Happsy models. Halcyon luxury line reaches $6,499–$9,679. Premium is justified by Amish craftsmanship and unmatched certifications but accessibility is limited.

What they do well

  • Industry-leading certification portfolio is unmatched: GOTS, GOLS, EWG VERIFIED (first-ever for mattresses), MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold, UL Formaldehyde Free, UL Non-Detectable PFAS, FSC, Rainforest Alliance, no competitor comes close
  • Proprietary glueless coil technology eliminates up to 10 lbs of adhesives (often containing formaldehyde) per mattress; Naturepedic invented and built their own equipment to achieve this
  • Modular EOS and Halcyon designs allow dual-comfort (different firmness per side) and swappable comfort layers, extending mattress lifespan by years
  • Full family ecosystem from crib to luxury adult: Good Housekeeping's Best Eco-Conscious Crib Mattress two years running
  • Active environmental advocacy: lobbies for chemical policy reform, founding member of environmental coalitions, donates $200K+ annually via 1% for the Planet

Room for improvement

  • No B Corp certification despite occasional third-party claims, the brand does not appear in the B Corp directory. Also lacks published carbon footprint data and Science-Based Targets.

About Naturepedic

Naturepedic's origin story is a grandfather's frustration turned industry disruption—in 2003, Barry A. Cik (a Board-Certified Environmental Engineer with 30+ years of experience) went searching for a safe crib mattress for his first grandchild. Every option contained polyurethane foam, vinyl/PVC, flame retardants, and phthalates. He co-founded Naturepedic with his sons Jeffrey and Jason to create the mattress he couldn't find.

The company operates from a GOTS-certified factory in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, where skilled Amish craftspeople hand-build each mattress. Core materials include US-grown USDA organic cotton traced to the farm, GOLS-certified organic latex from FSC-certified rubber tree forests, organic wool, and proprietary glueless steel coils. The brand invented its own manufacturing equipment to produce heat-sealed, adhesive-free pocketed coils, a typical mattress can contain up to 10 lbs of chemical adhesives, which Naturepedic eliminates entirely.

In 2017, recognising their premium pricing excluded many families, the team launched Happsy, an online-only, direct-to-consumer brand offering the same GOTS-certified factory quality at roughly half the price. Naturepedic ships via free shipping on most orders, with a 100-night trial and 25-year limited warranty. The company operates 20+ Organic Mattress Gallery showrooms across the US.
