Takasa

Quick verdict

Takasa is best for eco-conscious consumers seeking premium, certified organic and Fairtrade bedding and bath linens, especially in Canada and the U.S. What stands out is their dual GOTS + Fairtrade Cotton certification (the first company in Canada to hold both upon launch), carbon-neutral operations, and exceptional customer reviews (4.89/5 from 647 reviews). The main caveat: while GOTS and Fairtrade certifications are robust, the brand lacks B Corp certification and broader third-party sustainability ratings.

Rating breakdown

Materials & Sourcing
5/5

All products use 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton (certification CU 1011256), Fairtrade Cotton certified (FLO-ID 40793), with GOTS-approved dyes free from harmful chemicals. Duvet inserts use organic NZ/British wool or Canadian Downmark-certified Hutterite white goose down.

Labor & Ethics
4.5/5

Fairtrade Cotton certification ensures farmers receive fair, stable pricing and community premiums. Textiles ethically made in India in Fairtrade-certified factories. Inserts made in Canada and the USA. POC-owned brand. Minor deduction for not publishing specific factory names or audit reports.

Environmental Impact
4.5/5

Carbon-neutral operations with offset certificates included with every order. Partners with Simpli Zero Climate Solutions. Supports tree-planting in British Columbia, agricultural education for farmers, solar power projects in India, and clean water in Cambodia. Eco-friendly packaging.

Transparency
4/5

Registered as a BC Benefit Company (legally accountable). Shares certification numbers publicly. States manufacturing locations. Provides carbon offset certificates. However, no full supply chain map with factory names, no formal annual impact report, and not B Corp certified.

Price-to-Value
3.5/5

Premium pricing (sheet sets ~$150–$185 USD; wool duvet inserts from ~$525 USD) justified by dual certifications and quality. 300-thread-count long-staple cotton. Competitive with Coyuchi and Boll & Branch. Free shipping in Canada/USA plus 60-night trial.

What they do well

  • Dual GOTS + Fairtrade Cotton certification. The only company in Canada to hold both upon launch, ensuring environmental and social standards from farm to finished product, with certification numbers publicly shared
  • Carbon-neutral with tangible offsets. Every order includes a carbon offset certificate, with partnerships across solar power in India, clean water in Cambodia, reforestation in Zimbabwe, and tree-planting in British Columbia
  • Legal accountability as a BC Benefit Company, legally registered to be accountable for social and environmental responsibility, going beyond voluntary commitments
  • Exceptional customer reviews: 4.89/5 stars across 647 reviews, featured in ELLE Canada, Apartment Therapy, HGTV, Men's Journal, and Chatelaine
  • POC-founded, mission-driven. Founded by Ruby and Kuljit Rakhra (roots in India and Kenya), named "Takasa" from Swahili meaning "to purify, cleanse, and make bright"

Room for improvement

  • Supply chain transparency could go deeper. Manufacturing country (India) is disclosed, but specific factory names and independent audit reports are not publicly shared. A formal annual impact report with quantified metrics would strengthen trust.
  • Not B Corp certified. While GOTS and Fairtrade certifications are robust, additional third-party validation like B Corp would boost credibility for consumers comparing brands.

About Takasa

Takasa was founded in 2020 by husband-and-wife duo Ruby and Kuljit Rakhra in Vancouver, British Columbia. The brand was born from their journey into parenthood and desire to reform the textile industry's exploitative labour practices. They planned to launch at Toronto's Green Living Show on March 11, 2020, but COVID-19 forced them online, where the brand has since thrived.

All products are made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, grown and spun in India, then cut and sewn in Fairtrade-certified factories. The cotton is long-staple, single-ply, 300-thread-count, available in percale (cool and crisp), sateen (soft and luxurious), and flannel weaves. Duvet inserts and pillows are made in Canada and the USA, filled with organic wool from New Zealand or Britain, or Canadian Downmark-certified Hutterite white goose down.

Key certifications include GOTS, Fairtrade Cotton (member of Fairtrade Canada), OEKO-TEX, Downmark, and registration as a BC Benefit Company, a legal designation in British Columbia distinct from B Corp certification that requires accountability for social and environmental responsibility.

Shipping is free across Canada and the USA, with orders delivered in 2–14 days. Returns accepted within 60 days (free in Canada; $15 return fee for U.S. orders). Pricing is premium: sheet sets ~$150–$185 USD, duvet covers ~$150 USD, bath towels ~$55 USD, wool duvet inserts from ~$525 USD. Frequent promotions of 15–25% off are available. Also sold through Hudson's Bay, Amazon, Made Trade, and Cerqular.
