Are Blundstones sustainable?
Blundstone has made boots in Tasmania since 1870, and its 500-series Chelsea boot has become a global uniform. The company is still family-owned and headquartered in Hobart, but the leather boots are now made in Vietnam, Thailand, India, China and Mexico; only the rubber gumboots are still made in Tasmania.
Blundstone does better than many brands on oversight. It employs its own compliance inspectors at every factory and audits labour and environmental practices. The boots are leather, though, and the cemented polyurethane sole can’t be resoled. The brand doesn’t publish its climate footprint or a full supplier list.
So a Blundstone is a decent boot from a reasonably responsible company, with two gaps: it’s not vegan and it’s not repairable. Every alternative below fixes at least one of those.

Solovair is the Northamptonshire factory that made Dr. Martens under licence for 30 years, and its dealer boot is the British take on the Blundstone: elastic sides, an air-cushioned sole and a Goodyear welt. That stitched construction means a cobbler can put a new sole on when the tread goes, which no Blundstone can offer.
The vegan version uses an upper of recycled synthetic and plant-based material and comes in black and cherry red. Melbourne brand Merry People makes the Bobbi, an ankle rain boot in the Blundstone shape that is fully waterproof rather than just water-resistant. The outer is natural rubber, the lining is neoprene for warmth, and the arch-supported footbed makes it comfortable enough to wear all day, which most wellies aren’t.
The Bobbi has won best-rain-boot awards from Wirecutter and Travel + Leisure, and Merry People has never run a sale in over a decade, which it says keeps pricing fair. It’s not resoleable and it’s made in China, so it’s a materials-and-function pick rather than an ethics one. Available in a dozen colours.
4. Vegetarian Shoes Airseal Chelsea Boot

Brighton’s Vegetarian Shoes has been making vegan boots since 1990, and its Airseal Chelsea boots are built the traditional way: a Vegetan Micro upper stitched to a Goodyear welt with a thick, translucent Airseal sole that can be replaced. They’re made in one of England’s oldest shoe factories.
The uppers are the brand’s toughest water-resistant microfibre and need almost no breaking in. If you want a resoleable boot but Solovair is over budget, this is the one.

5. Nae Chelsea Boots

Portuguese brand Nae makes Chelsea boots from Piñatex, a leather alternative made from pineapple-leaf fibre, with organic cotton linings and chunky lug soles. Nae has been fully vegan since 2008, uses cork, apple and recycled materials across the range, and names the family-run factories in northern Portugal where every style is made.

If you’re not vegan and what bothers you about Blundstone is that the boots left Tasmania, Redback is the answer. The family-owned company still makes every boot in Sydney, and its UBOK elastic-sided boot is the closest thing to what a Blundstone used to be, with thicker leather and a sole widely regarded as more durable.
Redback is a workwear brand rather than a sustainability one, so there’s no published climate data and the leather isn’t certified. It earns its place on longevity and on being one of the very few pull-on boots still made where the brand is based.

German brand Feelgrounds makes the Chelsea for people who’ve gone barefoot and don’t want to go back. The sole is 7 mm of recycled rubber with zero heel drop, and the insole is a replaceable cork layer. At 335 g a boot it’s far lighter than a Blundstone.

Portuguese brand FAIR makes men’s Chelsea, desert and brogue boots from a PVC-free Italian microfibre that breathes better than most synthetics, on a Neolite sole. Production is in Portugal under what the brand describes as a CO2-free manufacturing system.
FAIR doesn’t have the certifications or the material innovation of Nae or Minuit sur Terre, but it’s a solid, well-priced vegan Chelsea from a country with a serious shoemaking tradition.
How to choose a Blundstone alternative
Resoleable or not. A cemented sole (Blundstone, Will’s, Nae, Merry People) is comfortable and light but finite. A Goodyear welt (Solovair, Vegetarian Shoes) costs more up front and lasts two or three times as long. Run your own numbers with our cost per wear calculator.
Waterproof vs water-resistant. Only the natural-rubber Merry People Bobbi, the Matt & Nat Laney and Will’s insulated waterproof Chelsea are truly waterproof. The rest will handle rain but not puddles.
Read the upper. Bio-based (Will’s), pineapple (Nae), grape and apple (Minuit sur Terre) are meaningfully better than plain PU; all are better than PVC.
Sizing. Solovair and Vegetarian Shoes use UK sizing and run roomy. Will’s and Nae run true to size. Feelgrounds runs wide by design.
