Boody
Rated: Great

Quick verdict
Boody is best for eco-minded shoppers seeking ultra-soft bamboo basics, underwear, bras, socks, and loungewear, with strong third-party certifications at accessible prices. The brand's B Corp score of 134.4 (top 1% globally) and PETA vegan certification are standout credentials. The main caveat: bamboo viscose is a chemically intensive process despite Boody's closed-loop system, and there is no evidence Boody ensures living wages or is taking meaningful climate action.

Boody sustainability rating
Our ratings are based on a scale from 1 (We Avoid) to 5 (Excellent). How we rate
Rating breakdown
Bamboo is FSC-certified and ECOCERT organic. ~86.8% of fibers are "preferred" (bamboo viscose, organic cotton, bamboo lyocell, recycled nylon/polyester). However, 13.2% remains non-preferred fibers (conventional nylon 6.9%, elastane 6.3%), and the viscose conversion process is inherently chemical-intensive even with a closed-loop system.
Factories in Southern China and Vietnam are WRAP-certified with a Supplier Code of Conduct aligned with ILO/UN standards. However, production takes place in countries with extreme risk of labour abuse, and there is no evidence of living wage assurance.
A Green Story lifecycle assessment found Boody's bamboo viscose has 27.4% lower GHG emissions, 48.8% less energy use, and 66% less freshwater use versus conventional cotton. Seamfree tube knitting reduces fabric waste by ~20%. However, no published emissions data, no net-zero targets, and there is no evidence the brand is taking meaningful action to reduce its climate impacts.
B Corp certification means a public impact assessment. Full material composition listed for all products. CanopyStyle partnership. However, no regular sustainability reports, no brand-wide emissions data, and the brand traces "most" (not all) of its supply chain.
Underwear at $13–20/pair, bras $22–45, loungewear $40–85, Competitive with mainstream premium brands (Calvin Klein, Lululemon) but with significantly better sustainability credentials. Multi-pack bundles save up to 25%. Customer reviews consistently praise durability and softness.
What they do well
- Exceptional B Corp score of 134.4: recertified and placing in the top 1% of all B Corp businesses globally; ranked 3rd among apparel brands worldwide
- Comprehensive certification stack: FSC-certified bamboo, ECOCERT organic, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, WRAP-certified factories, PETA Vegan, PFAs-free, 1% for the Planet member, CanopyStyle partner
- Reduced-waste manufacturing: seamfree tube-knitting process eliminates traditional cut-and-sew, reducing fabric waste by approximately 20%
- Slow fashion model: focuses exclusively on timeless basics rather than seasonal trend collections, reducing overproduction; expanding to sizes up to 4XL
- Strong customer satisfaction: Trustpilot 4 stars across US (~362 reviews), UK (~631), and Australia (~668); praised for softness, comfort, and responsive customer service
Room for improvement
- Bamboo viscose process concerns, primary material (68.6% of fibers) involves carbon disulfide processing. GOTS will not certify viscose as organic. Boody is introducing bamboo lyocell (6.8% of fibers) which uses a cleaner NMMO solvent process, but the vast majority remains viscose.
- Labor and climate gaps. There is no evidence of living wages, production takes place in high-risk countries, there is no published emissions data, and no science-based climate targets.
- No regular sustainability reporting, despite the high B Corp score, Boody does not publish sustainability reports or an emissions reduction roadmap, limiting independent verification of progress.
About Boody
Boody was founded in 2012 in Sydney, Australia by Shaun Greenblo and Elliot Midalia, who drew on combined experience in apparel and pharmaceuticals to create comfortable, sustainable everyday basics. The brand started selling underwear through chemists and pharmacies and has since expanded to over 2,000 retailers in 17 countries.
The primary material is bamboo viscose (typical blend: 79% viscose from bamboo, 15% nylon, 6% elastane in core underwear). Raw bamboo is FSC-certified and ECOCERT organic, grown without pesticides, fertilizers, or artificial irrigation. The viscose conversion uses a closed-loop system to recapture solvents and recycle water. Boody is also introducing bamboo lyocell and the proprietary "LYOLYTE" fabric (68% lyocell/24% nylon/8% elastane) as a cleaner alternative.
Manufacturing takes place in WRAP-certified factories in Southern China and Vietnam, near bamboo plantations. The B Corp certification (score 134.4, up from 101.6 in 2021) places Boody in the top 1% globally. Additional certifications include OEKO-TEX Standard 100, PETA Vegan/Cruelty-Free, and PFAs-free. The brand is a 1% for the Planet member and CanopyStyle partner. Shipping is free on US orders over $60 from regional fulfillment centers. A 30-day Comfort Guarantee covers first-time underwear/sock purchases.
